Full Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive Lima You arrive in Lima and will be met at the airport by our team and taken to your hotel. The rest of the day is free to relax and recover from your journey.

Day 2 - Flight to Puerto Maldonado (Amazon) You will be collected from your hotel and taken to the airport where you catch a flight (flight time approx 2hours 45minutes) to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon rainforest. Staff from the lodge will meet you at Puerto Maldonado airport and take you to the river, where your Amazon adventure will begin.

Together with the team from your lodge and your guide you will journey upriver to your lodge, which will be your home for the next 5 nights. The Amazon rainforest is home to an enormous array of mammals, birds and plants, this tranquil wilderness gives you the opportunity to see many rare and beautiful endemic species up close in their natural habitats.

Day 3-6 - Full days in the Amazon We work with a variety of different lodges offering different levels of comfort and facilities, but all with superb naturalists and outstanding wildlife. In each location there are a range of excursions organised by expert guides that will enable you explore this amazing place. Our favourites include:

Canopy Tower The best way to experience the wildlife of the rainforest canopy, estimated to hold over half of all species on earth, is to quite literally climb into it. Most of the lodges we work with have an observation tower that will take you right up into the canopy allowing you to see some of the amazing wildlife and affording a view over the vast canopy of the Peruvian Amazon.

Nature Trails An expert guide will take you through the jungle and help you locate and identify animals like the capybara, monkeys and rare exotic birds as well as experiencing the wealth of amphibian, insect and plant life found in the Amazon Rainforest.

Nocturnal Trail Once the sun has set the forest comes alive with nocturnal animals, plants release new scents and the sounds are simply amazing. A night hike is a great way to discover what these creatures get up to after sunset!

Canoe Paddling down the river will give you a chance to see some of the very rare and beautiful animals that live in this environment. Animals like the pink dolphin, the caiman and parrots feasting on the clay lakes are always popular attractions.

Day 7 - Flight Puerto Maldonado – Cusco – transfer to Sacred Valley for 3 nights After breakfast you will be taken to Puerto Maldonado airport from where you will catch your flight to Cusco (flight time approx. 45minutes). You will be met at Cusco airport and driven to your hotel in the Sacred Valley about an hour and a half away from Cusco, that will be your home for the next three nights.

Day 7-9 - Sacred Valley The Sacred Valley was sacred to the Incas for many reasons; one being that it had an agreeable climate and fertile planes, a rare combination in the high Andes. On the way you will visit Pisac, a village above which lies a majestic Inca fortress overlooking the valley. You will stop for lunch in a local hacienda and then travel on to visit the magnificent Inca ruins at Ollantaytambo, a major fortress and the last stronghold of the Incas as they fought off the Spanish invaders. From here you will head onto your hotel, with the rest of the day free to relax and acclimatise to the altitude.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas the perfect place for families to mix adventure with history. Below is an example of what can be included during your 3 night stay in this region. There are lots of options, ranging from white water rafting, to hiking, to visiting communities, to mountain biking, or simply relaxing in this spectacular setting. Here are some more details on some of our favourites:

White Water Rafting As the source of the Amazon River, Peru is a perfect place for rafting. There are many tributaries that cater for all levels of rafting abilities from the experienced enthusiast to the complete novice. Our favourite rafting option in the Sacred Valley will involve you being collected from your hotel and taken to the Urubamba River. The route would be a Class III route, which is a good level for novices, combining rapids with longer softer flowing stretches. Throughout the trip you would be escorted by expert rafting guides, with all the equipment required included;

Macas and Moray A chance to explore more in depth the Sacred Valley and gain more insight into the ancient culture of the Incas together with a private guide. This trip offers the chance to visit salt mines which have been used for salt extraction since Inca times at Macas and the experimental agricultural terraces at Moray where different levels of terraces are carved into a huge bowl. Each supposedly has a different microclimate, depending on how deep and are thought to have been used by the Incas to discover the optimal conditions for their crops.

Mountain Biking The Andes are superb for mountain biking. In the Sacred Valley area there are many different routes that cater for every level of experience, offering majestic scenery that you can enjoy from your saddle. All of our trips will have expert guides who also double up as bike mechanics. For larger groups, or upon request there will also be a support vehicle following.

Alternatively we can organise private tours to visit some of the fascinating communities in the area that live and farm the land as their ancestors have done for centuries.

Day 10 - Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu This morning you will take the train to Aguas Calientes and then on to Machu Picchu. So well hidden in the jungle covered ramparts of the Cordillera Villcabamba that the Spaniards never knew of it, Machu Picchu affords a glimpse into the Inca world and is one of the most stunning archaeological sites on earth. Throughout the morning you will have a top guide with you to ensure you get the most of your visit to this spectacular site. After lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, you then have time to explore on your own once the day crowds have dispersed.

Day 11 - Machu Picchu - Cusco An early start if you wish to get to Machu Picchu in time for sunrise. This morning a chance to explore the ruins at your own pace and soak up this amazing setting. If you are feeling adventurous we can organise for you to climb up Huayna Picchu , a steep climb, but you will be rewarded with amazing views back over Machu Picchu. In the afternoon you return to Aguas Calientes and take the train back to Cusco. You will be met at the train station and taken back to your hotel.

Day 12 - Cusco After breakfast one of our team of guides will pick you up from your hotel and take you on a private tour of the city of Cusco, the ceremonial heart of the Inca Empire. Cusco was inhabited by ‘proto-Incas’ as early as the 12th Century AD and was completely rebuilt in the early 15th Century by Pachacuteq, the Inca warrior-King and stood as the heart of the Incan kingdom. Inca walls remain the foundations of many of the city’s colonial buildings. You will also visit Saqsayhuaman, the monolithic Inca fortress overlooking Cusco, and the temple and amphitheatre at Kenko. Saqsayhuaman has some of the most impressive Inca walls in existence, built of hundreds of perfectly fitted stone blocks that weigh up to 130 tonnes each. The site is often called a fortress but more likely it was a sanctuary and temple to the sun. In the afternoon some time to relax and explore Cusco on foot – a really beautiful city that is perfect for walking around.

Day 13 - Cusco – Lima – Home After an early breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the airport in Cusco. Then you will catch a 1 hour 20minute flight to Lima from where you will fly home.
